Essential BBQ Sauce – Original, Lime & Garlic

There’s nothing like gorgeous summer days, warm, lazy, and out with the grill every evening! If your family is anything like mine then there’ll be a tray of condiments on the table with every meal, not least a couple of BBQ sauces! This summer’s project has been to make the Ultimate BBQ Sauce… And we did it!

And it doesn’t get more authentic than the batch below, cooked up whilst camping!

Essential BBQ Sauce - Original, Lime & GarlicEssential BBQ Sauce

250ml ox stock (2,5dl, 1 cup)

50ml dijon mustard (0,5dl, 1/4 cup)

1 tbsp white wine vinegar

60ml worcestershire sauce (0,6dl, 1/4 cup and 1 tbsp)

100ml tomato puré (1dl, 1/2 cup)

1 1/2 tbsp hickory liquid smoke

2 tsp strong paprika

40g brown sugar (0,5dl, 1/4 cup)

Above is the basic recipe. For some variations:

Essential BBQ Sauce Lime

Add 1 lime – zest and juice

Essential BBQ Sauce Garlic

Add 3 cloves of crushed garlic

We usually make a double or triple batch and store in a jar in the fridge. It keeps for a few weeks – if you haven’t already eaten it all by then!

  1. Perfect for this weekend – thanks! And I love the step by step images. They’re super useful. Thanks for linking up to #recipeoftheweek – sorry I’m a bit late over! Have Pinned this post and scheduled in a tweet. New linky just went live for this week 🙂 x

  2. I have been looking for a good BBQ sauce recipe for a while. I’ve made up a few myself but always felt something was missing. This sounds delicious. BBQ ribs it is this weekend 🙂

    • Wow, perfect! Hope you LOVE it as much as we do!!
Don’t skimp on the Dijon – that’s what gives it the kick
If you don’t want to use so much sugar, you can substitute for some honey 🙂

    • This recipe’s a guys dream!! Even if they’re not into cooking, it’s something about mastering the grill that drives them anyway, and nailing a homemade BBQ sauce is the golden grail!!
      This one’s definitely a keeper!

    • What a fantastic gesture! I love finding a recipe when I know straight away who I want to make it for… Hope your daughter loves it! 🙂

  3. This looks like a great little sauce! I must make it for our next BBQ. What is hickory liquid smoke? Is it essential? x Mel

    • Hi Tiffany!
It’s DELICIOUS!! …I wish you tones of fantastic grill parties and very impressed friends! 😉
      Love that you’ve popped by!

  4. Haven’t heard of hickory liquid smoke either, but am going to look out for it. This sounds like a good thing to try with the BBQ….am making a mental note to myself to be more adventurous and to stop buying the premarinaded packs!

    • You won’t be disappointed! This is my man’s recipe and it just vanishes every time we serve it!! There really is NOTHING better than a homemade BBQ sauce 🙂 …Come back, and let me know what he thought!

  5. Mmm love a good BBQ and this sauce sounds like the business. I’ve not heard of ‘hickory liquid smoke’ but I can imagine that adds that extra BBQ kick many sauces are lacking!

    • You should find Hickory in any well stocked food store – together with Worcestershire sauce – it definitely gives the recipe that little hidden extra 🙂 …Actually the ‘kick’ so to say is in the Dijon Mustard!! – Surprised right?!
…So you definitely don’t want to exchange that for something else 🙂 …Happy cooking!
